Sometimes we are misled into assuming certain snack foods are healthful when, in fact, they aren’t. Here are several such foods that are usually, by reputation, thought to be healthy:
1) Peanuts— Although peanuts do contain protein, about 74% of their calories come from fat. A small bag of dry roasted peanuts (vending machine size) has 170 calories and 14 grams of fat— the same amount you would get from eating almost three pats of butter. Another little known “quality” of peanuts is that they are slow to be digested— that’s why you can consume great quantities of them before you get a “full” feeling.
2) Granola— It’s high in fat— frequently saturated fact such as coconut oil.
3) Cheese— On the positive side, cheese contains a lot of calcium and some protein. The bad thing about it is that cheese has one of the highest saturated fat contents of any food.
4) Muffins— Unless you make them yourself with low-fat ingredients, you’ll most likely be eating an unhealthful food. Most of the muffins now sold in stores are 4 1/2 ounces to 6 ounces at about 100 calories per ounce. And they contain about as much fat as three pats of butter.
5) Sunflower seeds— While a package of roasted sunflower seeds contains some protein, it has about the same amount of fat as a bag of potato chips.
