Just as the average dose that is safe for each normal tissue is known, so the average dose that will destroy each type of cancer is known. Some types of cancer are more sensitive than others. For example, one type of cancer of the testis—seminoma—is much more likely to be cured by radiation than other types of testicular cancer. On average, lymphoma in lymph nodes is more sensitive to radiation than secondary cancer in lymph nodes. Ewing’s sarcoma of bone is much more sensitive to radiation than other primary bone cancers. Thus the type of cancer is important in predicting whether it is likely to be cured by radiation and what dose will probably be necessary.

All around us flowers and trees emit vibrations, each uniquely different in colour, aroma and healing properties. Colour can be described as light – visible radiant life-enhancing energy of certain wavelengths. Photoreceptors in the retina, called cones, translate this energy into colours. The retina contains three kinds of cones, one for blue, one for green and one for red. We perceive other colours and tones by combining these colours.

Colour has an amazing ability to alter our moods, health, thought patterns and spiritual well-being in a subtle, yet transformative way. It is believed that when the energy of colour enters our body, it stimulates two of our major glands, the pituitary and pineal glands. This in turn affects the production of various hormones, which in turn affects a variety of physiological and metabolic processes. It is no wonder certain colours have such an effect on our moods, thoughts and behaviour.

Colour is such a powerful healer and we are all intuitively attuned to this, even if we don’t consciously think we are, as our whole world is coloured. Each colour, in its original essence, has the ability to conjure up a different emotion, feeling, thought and healing vibration. We all have the ability to react to colours in different ways and all possess different preferences for colours. This preference may be due to either cultural, psychological or intuitive selection as to which colour is best suited to our needs.

For instance, we all know how sedating and calming blues are when we look at the expansive sky or endless ocean. Or how uplifting are the sun’s golden rays, penetrating our aura on a beautiful clear day. Allow your own intuition to guide you, experiment with different colours and become aware of how each one makes you feel. God’s spectrum of healing colours is available to us every day, allowing us to tap into the immense healing power.

As a naturopath I have treated thousands of people all over the world and one thing that I have learnt in my experience is that illness is not purely physical, there is nearly always an emotional connection to cancer and chronic disease. Two nasty side effects of orthodox cancer treatment are bladder infections and appetite loss. Angelica root is a useful digestive aid for appetite stimulation and it contains antiseptic properties and is a mild diuretic, thus flushing out harmful bacteria. It is reputed to be an excellent urinary antiseptic.

What is the best way to use angelica?

Decoction or herbal tea – put 1 teaspoon of the cut root in a cup of water, bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes. Take off the heat and let this sit for 15 minutes. Take 1 cup 3 times daily. Tincture – take 2 to 5 ml of the tincture three times daily.

Astragalus (Huang qi)

Astragalus is an incredible immune system stimulant, possessing strong immune-restorative qualities due to its powerful carbohydrate, Astragalan B. It benefits the immune system by increasing the production of interferon and enhancing natural killer cell function. Natural killer cells are vital in fighting cancer and cancer patients often present with low levels of these cells. Astragalan  found in Astragalus protects against several forms of bacteria and tends to stimulate the body’s immune system.

Astragalus is believed to protect against distant metastases (spread) of melanoma (a deadly form of cancer) to the lungs. It is also thought to inhibit primary lung cancer. It protects against the toxic side effects of chemotherapy and may protect the bone marrow of patients undergoing chemotherapy.

In China, astragalus is reputed to be a popular and effective ’spleen tonic. It is very effective in increasing wound healing and increasing adrenal gland function, thereby helping to improve energy levels. It increases stamina and the body’s production of energy and would be useful in treating fatigue, a major side effect of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation treatment.

Astragalus protects the liver against the toxic effects of the common cleaning fluid, carbon tetrachloride and in persons receiving chemotherapy. It is considered a valuable immune system tonic that nourishes and fortifies a person’s constitution, especially in chronic immune deficiency states such as cancer.

What is the best way to use astragalus?

• Infusion – pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 to 2 teaspoons of Astragalus. Let sit for 10

minutes. Drink 3 cups a day.

• Dried root – take in dosages of 1 to 4 grams per day.

• Capsules or tablets — take as directed by your herbalist, naturopath or health practitioner.

Calcium

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. The total calcium content of the body is entirely renewed over a six year period. Calcium’s most famous role is found in advertising campaigns throughout the world stating its essential role in preventing osteoporosis. It is vital for the formation of strong bones and teeth, assists nerves, muscles, blood clotting, heart rhythm and parathyroid function. It also aids in the metabolism of vitamin D. Calcium needs magnesium, phosphorous, vitamins A, C, D and E to carry out its functions.

It is believed that by taking 1500mg – 2000mg of calcium daily a person can decrease the incidence of colon and rectal cancer dramatically. It does this by binding to cancer-causing fats and bile acids in the intestines and normalizing the growth of cells in the intestinal wall. Low calcium intake may also increase the risk of breast and cervical cancers. The proper calcium/phosphorous ratio reduces the risk of cancer in the large intestine.

A low intake of vitamin D and calcium may increase the incidence of breast cancer.

Cancer research has shown that cancerous tissues are abnormally low in calcium. Due to a lack of calcium, these cancer cells can spread to other areas of the body. Calcium also has the ability to block the toxicity of harmful fats without damaging the colon. Regular calcium supplementation is believed to decrease tumour size.

Calcium helps to prevent some forms of cancer and prevents pre-cancerous cells from becoming cancerous. It also protects the body from toxic heavy metals, including cadmium, lead and mercury by competing with them for absorption. Magnesium and calcium in combination have the ability to eliminate certain types of toxic radioactive isotopes that may become lodged in bones. Calcium also promotes the elimination of arsenic from the body.

Good food sources of calcium include tahini, Swiss cheese, almonds, asparagus, broccoli, buttermilk, sesame seeds, cabbage, carob, cheese, collards, dandelion greens, goats milk, kale, figs, dulse, tofu, watercress, green leafy vegetables, skim milk and low fat dairy products. Excess intake of chocolate, sugar, alcohol and salt all cause a severe loss of calcium from the body.

Copper

Copper is a trace mineral, with most of the copper content of the body being stored in the muscles, liver and bones. Copper may act to prevent cancer. Animal studies have shown that copper has a protective role and this may be due to its antioxidant properties as part of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase.

Copper is required in combination with manganese for the proper assimilation of iron. Copper-rich foods assist tissue respiration, protect the lungs from infections and improve the function of the body’s digestive system. This mineral is a key element in the body’s healing process and plays a role in energy production.

Good food sources of copper include raw nuts, purple or red onions, almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, legumes, whole grains and prunes.

MCP may work by preventing cancer cells from metastasising, which occurs when malignant cells spread throughout the body, first detaching themselves from the original tumour and, like seeds blown on the wind, travelling through the bloodstream until they find another site on which to tough down and begin dividing and multiplying.

Metastasis is the gravest danger a cancer patient can face. If a tumour were simply to stay where it originated, it might cause some local damage but it could be removed surgically with few, if any, complications. Studies suggest that MCP may work like special bait that attracts migrating cancer cells and renders them harmless. It is thought to help reduce metastasis in melanoma patients.

It appears that MCP attracts cancer cells and binds with them before they get a chance to fasten themselves to healthy cells. Cancer cells contain a substance called galactin. Galactin looks for its counterpart, galactose which is found in many cells. MCP is particularly high in galactose and thus it can attract cancer cells, bind to them and then render them harmless. Cancer cells don’t appear to ‘care’ whether they are binding to MCP or a human cell, because they are simply ‘hungry’ and on the hunt for galactose.
